Kelpie Wilson is a writer and a mechanical engineer with a passion for wild nature, regenerative farming, and renewable energy. Author of The Biochar Handbook (Chelsea Green, 2024), she is a recognized expert in the practical arts of making and using biochar as soil amendment. She pioneered development of the Flame Cap Kiln biochar technology for use by forestry contractors, arborists, woodland owners, and farmers, and is the inventor of the Ring of Fire Biochar Kiln®, sold through RingOfFire.earth. She presents many workshops each year bringing practical biochar technology to end users, both in person and online.

 

Since 2012 she has been a consultant providing technology and market analysis for clients in private industry, government, and the non-profit sector, including serving as the principle investigator for a three-year Conservation Innovation Grant from the USDA-NRCS. She has co-authored a number of peer-reviewed papers and government reports on biochar. From 2008 to 2012, she worked for the International Biochar Initiative on communications and project development, and she is a co-founder of the US Biochar Initiative (now the American Biochar Institute).
